Purpose, Goals, Expecatations, Grading

 

Goals/Purpose

  1. Students will learn and apply skills and strategies for reading and writing in academic and shop areas, for employment, and general life skills.
  2. Students will practice the specific skills they need to be successful until they can use the skills independently for activities in and out of school.
  3. Each student will work on only the skills they need to improve.

Sophomore

  • Sentence Writing

Expectations for Classroom Behavior

1.  Follow all school rules.  Students have received instruction  and taken a test on the students handbook and are responsible for knowing and following all the rules presented in it.

2.  Follow the social contract.  Each class created a group agreement on what behaviors are necessary to make the classroom comfortable for every students and to create an atmosphere where every student has the optimal opportunity to learn and be successful.

3.  Take care of yourself, each other, and our classroom.  We expect students to come to class ready to learn, to show each other and instructors common courtesies, and to keep the classroom envirnment clean and pleasant.

 

Grading Policy

70% Participation            Daily participation begins at 80.

                                                 First occurrence of teacher correction drops grade to 79.

                                                 Each additional correction drops grade 10 points.

                                                 By consistently attending  to instruction AND 

                                                         offering appropriate comments,

                                                          volunteering to read, 

                                                          asking thoughtful questions,             

                                                          advocating, etc.,

                                                  the student can earn points above the 80 initially given.

20% Graded Work            Includes assessments, enrichment assignments, and small group work.

10% Preparation              A check for

                                                     functioning pencil or pen, 

                                                     paper,

                                                     agenda book and 

                                                     ID

                                                 will be made on random days, with at least one per cycle.

Preparation checks for freshmen will include appropriately organized notebooks.

                                               

Freshman notebooks are graded using the following rubric:

Completeness

Notebook has a complete record of all class activities, handouts, a pencil, and paper.

Notebook contains most class activities and handouts.

Notebook is missing significant number of handouts and/or activities.

Organization

Handouts and notes are organized in a clear manner in clearly marked sections.

There is evidence of some organization but some of the notebook is out of order/unclear.

Many activities and handouts are not organized.

Note Taking

Reflect key ideas and necessary details.

Notes are incomplete- missing key ideas and/or important details.

There are major gaps in notes.

Neatness

All writing is legible and everything is in its’ place.

Notebook is mostly neat but a little disordered.

Notebook is in disorder and /or illegible.
