Math Facts - Timed Practice
Last updated March 15th, 2012 at 12:56 p.m.
As we near the last quarter of the school year, we are encouraging the students to learn the basic addition and subtraction facts by memory. Through our math activities since August, the students have a good understanding of the concepts of addition and subtraction, and have learned strategies to solve them. The expectation is that by the end of first grade, the students will know the basic facts through 10 quickly by memory.
To encourage this learning, every Wednesday we will be doing timed math practice. The children will be given a worksheet with 30 basic facts. They will be timed for 2 minutes. The goal is to be able to do all 30 problems correctly in 2 minutes.
Once a child has met the goal of completing all problems correctly in the time limit, he will go on to the next level of problems. A child can work on the same level of problems for as many weeks as necessary to meet the goal. The problems will change each week, but the type of problem will remain the same. The six levels the children will be able to work through are:
Addition to 10
Subtraction to 10
Mixed Addition (some facts to 10 and some facts to 18)
Mixed Subtraction (some facts to 10 and some facts to 18)
Addition to 18 (all facts with sums between 11 and 18)
Subtraction to 18 (subtracting from numbers 11 to 18)
Your child will be bringing home the timed math practice paper each week. The number of problems correct in the 2 minutes will be recorded at the top. Your support in reviewing the paper with your child will be appreciated.
The use of flash cards is one way you could help your child in learning the basic facts. Additionally, use the links above for math practice. Another site that is helpful in creating practice sheets that you may print out or complete online is www.mathfactcafe.com. Use both the first grade and second grade links on this site.
Remember the expectation for first graders is to learn the facts to 10. The other levels are to provide enrichment for those students ready to work beyond the expectations.
